Cultural Differences

We were exhausted last "night" and slept about 10 hours, which hopefully will help reset our clock to this time. It's about 6 in the morning now, and we'll be leaving for the Great Wall in a couple of hours after breakfast.

We wimped out and had room service last night. Katrina ordered French toast, which was on the evening menu. What French toast means to us: generous slices of bread, dipped in batter and pan-fried, dusted in sugar, with syrup and butter. What it means to the kitchen at the Jianguo Hotel: two thin slices of bread, untoasted, with little plastic things of butter and honey. I showed the waiter the menu in Chinese and confirmed they hadn't misunderstood what we ordered.

Buffet breakfast today. Katrina brought chocolate-covered espresso beans to handle her caffeine jones.
